WARISAN president Shafie Apdal, who is under investigation over the alleged embezzlement of government funds, has questioned why graft-busters are choosing to probe into a case that allegedly happened two years ago.
However, Shafie, who was detained by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for eight days to assist in investigations, declined to elaborate further when asked if he thought the arrest was politically-motivated.
“Not today, I suppose. I hope you understand,” Shafie told media representatives.
“I can’t be saying things that (are) still under investigation.
Shafie also urged the public to give the anti-graft agency time to complete the probe, adding that he had no complaints about the manner in which the investigations have been conducted.
“What’s important is, don’t speculate,” he said.
Today marks Shafie’s first Parliamentary appearance after having to skip the opening session last week.
Shafie was remanded on the evening of October 19 and released on Friday on a RM100,000 bail in two sureties.
The Semporna MP is one of several individuals being investigated over the alleged embezzlement of RM1.5 billion allocated under the Rural and Regional Development Ministry for projects within the state.
The investigation involves the implementation of projects between 2009 and 2015 by the ministry. Shafie was its minister during that time.
The MACC has frozen some RM170 million in bank accounts and assets linked to companies involved in the projects. – October 31, 2017.
