THE water-treatment plants in Sg Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi remain closed, leaving more than 1.5 million consumers without water for a third day in a row.

Pengurusan Air Selangor said production won’t resume until the odour pollution comes down to zero TON (threshold odour number)  .

“Based on the monitoring until 6am today, the pollution reading remained at one TON and sometimes went up to two TON.

“Therefore, we are unable to resume operations of the water-treatment plants at Sg Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi until the reading stays at zero TON.

“This is to prevent users from experiencing bad odour from using the water,” PUAS said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

The Sg Semenyih plant had to be shut down on Saturday as a result of the pollution, affecting 1.5 million consumers in Hulu Langat, Sepang, Putrajaya, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Langat

Yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the two plants should begin operating last night.

He said the pollution caused by waste poured down Indah Water Konsortium manholes in Bandar Putera Mahkota had been cleaned by 4pm, and water in Sg Semenyih was safe for use.

However, some consumers might find the residual odour unpleasant, Amirudin said.

“Our hope is to resume supply by 11pm,” he said after closing a cycling event in the Shah Alam yesterday.

The National Water Management Commission (SPAN) said yesterday it will act against the polluters under the Water Services Industry Act. – December 23, 2019.
