In seeking common Muslim identity, others must not be oppressed, says PM

MUSLIMS should have a common identity but must not judge one another based on superficial values, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said after the closing of the KL Summit 2019 today.

He told a press conference after the gathering of Muslim leaders and scholars that Muslims must not impose their culture on others, as the Quran recognises and accepts that people follow different faiths.

  • When there is big, there must be something small to contrast big. Beautiful vs ugly, strong vs weak, advanced vs backward, rich vs poor are just some of the dualities that conceptualize in human minds. Not many wise men have good control of the formation of this worldly concepts. So, in seeking common identity, very possibly one grows to detest that which is not common. Conflicts and frictions thus occur. It will be better to leave it to each individual to find himself the identity he wants, instead of making it common. Therefore leave the 2Rs out of the politics.

  • The majority of the non Muslims simply do not care what others believe in. Hence there is fewer quarrels over religions.
