Police investigating 1MDB again, says minister

THE police have been told to investigate 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) for a second time, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said.

“Police are investigating the 1MDB case following instructions from the attorney-general on October 24,” said Azalina.

“As the investigation is still ongoing, any revelations about the details of the probe could jeopardise and prejudice the case,” Azalina said in a written reply to Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo today.

Gobind had asked the government about the status of the 1MDB investigation.

On April 12, then inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar had said police had completed its investigation and submitted its report to the attorney-general.

Police began investigating 1MDB in 2015 following a police report by then Langkawi Umno member Anina Saadudin over US$650 million (RM2.7 billion) deposited into Prime Minister Najib Razak’s personal account in 2013 that was not reflected in Umno’s accounts.

Subsequently, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Attorney-General’s office and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission all conducted their own investigations into 1MDB and the donation.

However, in August 2015, after then attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail retired on medical grounds, then Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed and his deputy Mohd Shukri Abdul’s retirements, the 1MDB investigations all came to nought.

In January last year, new Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali cleared Najib of any wrongdoing and said the donation was a gift from the royal family of Saudi Arabia. – October 30, 2017.
