THE Registrar of Societies (RoS) has hauled up three organisations involved in an event marking the 30th anniversary of the Hat Yai peace accords in Kajang earlier this month.

The three groups, which were not named, have been issued a notice asking their committee members to explain their involvement at the event, reports The Star.

RoS also identified six other organisations which took part in the anniversary, as “unlawful organisations” as they are not registered in accordance with the Societies Act 1966.

The December 1 commemoration was held in conjunction with the signing of the peace treaty between Malaysia, Thailand and the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) in 1989, which ended the communist insurgency.

Former members of the CPM were reportedly at the gathering in Kajang, in which DAP’s Sg Pelek assemblyman Ronnie Liu was present in his private capacity.

Liu has since been questioned by the police on his involvement at the gathering, which came on the heels of controversy over the secret return of former CPM leader Chin Peng’s ashes from Thailand. His ashes have been scattered in his home state, Perak. – December 13, 2019.
