A WOMAN claiming to be the companion of former MIC president S. Samy Vellu has filed for an interim order seeking RM25,000 in monthly maintenance with the Ipoh High Court.

The application by Meeriam Rosaline Edward Paul is to be heard today, Free Malaysia Today reports.

Meeriam also named Samy Vellu’s son, Vell Paari, as a respondent in the application for the interim order, pending the disposal of her main suit.

In the suit filed in August, Meeriam is asking the court to recognise her as a member of Samy Vellu’s family and to give her unrestricted access to visit him.

Meeriam said she has had a “quasi-spousal union” with Samy Vellu since 1981, which is supported by documents.

However, when Vell Pari took control of his father’s finances in 2017, he stopped the monthly maintenance payments.

Vell Paari on December 2 filed an originating summons against his father to assess his mental state and capability to handle his affairs.

He said his father had been diagnosed with dementia from Alzheimer’s disease since 2017.

Samy Vellu, the former Sg Siput MP for eight terms from 1974 to 2008, was also works minister.

Meeriam, lives in Ipoh, is represented by R.S.N. Rayer and Ramesh Sivakumar, FMT reports. – December 12, 2019.
