Seremban principal, education official questioned in Negaraku case

TWO witnesses have had their statements recorded in relation to the singing of Negaraku in Mandarin at a Chinese school in Seremban.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Huzir Mohamed said the duo are the assistant director (planning and management) at the district Education Office’s complaints and investigation unit and the principal of the school in question.

“Other witnesses’ statements will be recorded… appointments have been arranged,” he said in a statement today.

On December 6, the Education Ministry said it will not compromise with those who breach regulations with regard to the federal constitution.

A one-minute, 23-second video clip said to be recorded on September 26 last year has made the rounds, showing students at the Chinese school singing the national anthem in Mandarin.

Another incident that has been brought to light is the singing of Negaraku in Arabic at a national school in Gurun.

“Statements were recorded yesterday from the headmaster, Kuala Muda district education officer, and individual who recorded and uploaded the clip on Facebook,” said Huzir of the Kedah case.

“Police have received eight reports on the issue. Both cases are being investigated under Section 8(3) of the National Anthem Act 1968 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.”

He said the probe papers for the two cases will be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers along with police’s suggestions based on the outcome of their investigations.

On the case of the wrong flag being displayed on the stadium screen instead of the Jalur Gemilang at a Malaysian Basketball Association event, Huzir said 31 reports have been lodged and five witnesses – the complainant, organiser, association executive secretary, company director and IT vendor – questioned.

The equipment used was also seized, he said. – Bernama, December 11, 2019.
