ONE hundred and sixty of the 222 members of parliament have declared their assets, says news reports.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof today confirmed that 160 MPs have declared their wealth at the expiry of the deadline today.

“Sixty-two others have not submitted their declaration forms,” Arif said in a statement.

All Pakatan Harapan elected representatives have met the deadline for submission. Only three Barisan Nasional reps have done so.

Umno MPs make up more than half of the 62 lawmakers who have defied the order, at 36. None of the 18 PAS members have complied.

PAS leaders had opposed the order citing an Islamic prohibition against making one’s wealth known.

Others have based their objection on reasons of privacy and security.

Minister in charge of law, Liew Vui Keong had warned that those who disobeyed could be suspended from parliament for contempt of the House. The rebels could also be fined, he had said.

He said the objections that the MPs raised were groundless and that non-compliance would not be tolerated. – December 5, 2019.
