A CHICKEN seller by the name of “Wan Azizah” was held up by the prime minister as an example of an entrepreneur who had benefited from government aid, during the tabling of Budget 2018 in Parliament today.

Prime Minister Najib Razak expressed sympathy for “Wan Azizah” for her suffering, as well as amazement at her resilience.

“Wan Azizah, better known as Kak Wan, had gone through so many challenges in her life.

“But she had patience and she persevered.

“It seems that Kak Wan is here with us today,” he added, to loud protests from the opposition.

Najib was grinning from ear to ear as he pointed to a Wan Azizah Wan Salleh seated in the public gallery.

Wan Azizah, Najib said, was an example of a successful Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia recipient.

“She has successfully become a millionaire by breeding and processing chickens with a startup capital of only RM500 from Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia,” he said, referring to the micro-financing programme.

The opposition was upset with the jest as opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail is popularly known as Kak Wan.

The “challenges” that the other Wan Azizah had faced in life mentioned by the prime minister may also apply to Dr Wan Azizah’s experience of seeing her husband Anwar Ibrahim convicted of sodomy and jailed for five years for the offence. – October 27, 2017.
