Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Liew Vui Keong today tabled a bill to amend the federal constitution to limit the prime minister’s tenure to two terms.

He tabled the bill for the first reading, saying the second reading and debate at policy stage would take place at the next Dewan Rakyat session next year.

A copy of the constitutional amendment bill was placed on the Dewan Rakyat lawmakers’ table ahead of today’s meeting.

Article 43 (2) of the bill states that “through this amendment, a member of the House of Representatives shall not be appointed prime minister if he has held the office of prime minister for two terms of parliament.”

The change is in line with Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto to limit the prime minister to two terms in office.

This is Pakatan Harapan’s third attempt at amending the constitution.

On July 16, PH made a historic amendment to Articles 47 and 119 to grant 18-year-olds full suffrage.

It was, however, was unable to amend Article 1(2) to restore Sabah and Sarawak’s positions in the constitution after it failed to obtain the necessary two-thirds majority vote on April 9.
