Laughable police investigating themselves for ‘deep state’ elements, says Santiago

PUTRAJAYA should set up an independent body, one which is free from external influence and control, to investigate the allegation of the existence of a “deep state” in Malaysia, said Charles Santiago.

The Klang MP said common sense would show that it was a conflict of interest for an entity to probe itself.

“It is laughable that the police are investigating the issue as the force is also allegedly implicated in the deep state allegedly at play in Malaysia,” he said.

The police probing themselves is hardly an independent investigation, said the third-term lawmaker.

Santiago maintained he had the right to speak up against any attempt to destabilise the government.

“And this includes propaganda, conspiracy theories and political manoeuvring, which can create chaos and further division in our multi-racial society.

“In fact, it’s my duty and responsibility to comment on issues that can pose a threat to national security and well-being of my fellow citizens,” said Santiago.

The lawmaker was commenting on a report by The Malaysian Insight that the police had begun investigating claims of a deep state at work in the country.

Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister Sivarasa Rasiah had recently said that the arrests of two Pakatan Harapan assemblymen and 10 others were not endorsed by the administration.

The 12 were charged under the controversial Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) for allegedly attempting to revive the defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Malaysia.

Sivarasa had alleged that the arrests of the 12 under Sosma, was the work of a deep state to damage the ruling coalition.

The deep state, Sivarasa had said, was one of the biggest challenges facing PH in its efforts to reform key institutions.

Deep state refers to individuals or groups within a bureaucracy pursuing an agenda which may be in conflict with that of the elected administration. – December 3, 2019.
