PUTRAJAYA is studying whether to abolish or amend the country’s controversial security laws, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad told parliament today.

Dr Mahathir said the government had to consider both options as it had to ensure both national security as well as human rights were protected.

“Sosma, for example, is meant to safeguard the country from subversive elements. However there is room for the law to be misused.”

“We are studying if we should abolish or amend the clauses in the security laws so that we can ensure national interests and human rights are protected at the same time.

“However it has to be done carefully and can only happen after a thorough study has been done,” Dr Mahathir said during question time today.

The prime minister was responding to Edmund Santhara Kumar (PKR-Segamat) who asked about the status of the security laws which the government had promised to abolish during the general election campaign last year. – December 3, 2019.
