MOHAMAD Sabu wants Putrajaya to allocate 1% of Malaysia’s gross domestic product each year for defence, so as to boost national security.
Shortly after the Defence White Paper 2020-2030 was passed in the Dewan Rakyat, the defence minister said the 1% allocation should be included in the 12th and 13th Malaysia Plans.
“We want at least 1% of GDP every year. But since the 12MP and 13MP have already been outlined, we will ask for more.
“This suggestion is even supported by the opposition,” he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby.
The White Paper tabled today sets the country’s direction for defence for a 10-year period, from 2021 to 2030.
It aims to review current strategies and enhance the armed forces’ readiness to protect the nation.
Mohamad’s deputy, Liew Chin Tong, said the ministry will ensure the welfare of retired soldiers is taken care of, including by giving them a second career opportunity.
It is important for the government, private sector and public to provide them with jobs as many are still young, he said.
“Their experience can contribute to our economy.
“Pensions are part of the core welfare elements that will be retained, but there are officers who retire at 42 or 44 years old.”
He said the ministry will also set up the Defence Investment Committee, to be chaired by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. – December 2, 2019.
