AN OPPOSITION MP swearing in Parliament during an exchange with a backbencher should apologise to women said Brig-Gen (retd) Mohamed Arshad Raji

The National Patriots’ Association (Patriot) president said, even though the Speaker had censured Noh Omar (BN-Tanjung Karang) for uttering the expletive, it was not sufficient.

“Asking for the withdrawal of the unmentionable word is too light a ticking off.

“The so-called honourable Noh Omar must also apologise to all women and the nation’s youth.

“He is a poor example of an adult, a father, and certainly not fit to be an MP,” said Arshad in a statement today.

The veterans’ chief said the House is nowhere when there are members behaving like hooligans in terms of language and uncouth behaviour.

During a heated exchange with RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) on Wednesday, Noh shouted a Malay expletive starting with the letter “p” at Rayer after the latter called him “stupid” for making allegations against Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming.

Yesterday, following complaints from both sides, Speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof ordered Noh and Rayer to retract their statements.

“The conduct of parliamentarians is supposed to be dignified. Their speeches are supposed to inspire, be intelligent, contribute to innovative ideas, and add value to debates.

“At the very least they should provide good role model especially to our young.

“However, when members shout abusive language and use vulgar words in their speech, arguing like the uneducated instead of articulating intelligently, hooligan is the kindest label for them,” he said.

He noted that there had been previous occasions of vulgarities and sexism.

“Patriot expects all MPs from both the ruling and opposition to speak up intelligently, contribute to good debates, and ensure a respectable decorum in the house.

“Otherwise they are merely occupying the seats and wasting public money,” he said. – November 30, 2019.
