MALAYSIAN diver Wendy Ng Yan Yee has failed a doping test and will have to return the gold medals she won at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games recently, The Star Online reports.

The portal confirmed the news with Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia secretary Mae Chen, who said the union was notified this morning of Ng’s B sample test results taken in India two weeks ago.

She tested positive for sibutramine (an appetite suppressant), which is on the list of banned substances by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Chen told The Star Online that the union would not comment on the matter until Amateur Swimming Association of Malaysia president Shahidan Kasim was notified.

Ng, 24, won the gold in the women’s 3m springboard individual category and in the synchronised 3m springboard final with fellow diver Nur Dhabitah Sabri at the 29th Sea Games in August.

She is likely to be banned for a maximum of up to two years and not four years as the use of sibutramine is not considered a serious offence compared with other performance-enhancing drugs, the portal said.

Ng had also represented Malaysia and made the 3m springboard individual final at the Rio Olympics last year. – October 26, 2017.
