THE PKR Youth wing is not tied down by tradition when carrying out the agenda of the young, said the wing’s chief Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.

His comments come after some factions believed to be aligned with PKR deputy president Azmin Ali have criticised the withdrawal of Azmin’s invitation to officiate PKR Youth’s national congress in Malacca on December 6.

Past congresses were opened by the PKR deputy president, but this year the youth wing decided to invite former party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the wife of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.

Akmal said it was only a convention for the congress to be officiated by the deputy president, and this time the youth wing was ready to break that convention.

“There is nothing about this being a tradition. This is an issue of what we usually do but we have agreed to make changes in line with what the youth want,” he told reporters today.

He also noted that there have been instances in the past where other party leaders have officiated either the youth wing’s or the wanita wing’s meetings.

The Johor Baru MP said others should not dispute the wing’s decision to invite Dr Wan Azizah.

Akmal said errant and recalcitrant party leaders must be ready to face disciplinary action.

He said it was the duty of the party discipline board to take action against such leaders.

“We are a reformist and democratic party but anyone who goes overboard must face party action,” he said. – November 24, 2019.
