PAS had received offers to form a backdoor government, said its president Abdul Hadi Awang last night.

Hadi made the revelation during his speech about the opposition’s victory at the Tg Piai by-election at the Muafakat Nasional Selangor ceramah last night.

Without naming who made the offer, Hadi said PAS rejected it and wants to win the right way, through the 15th general election in cooperation with Umno.

“There has been a good response (towards PAS-Umno pact) and this is a good political development, inshallah we will enter through the front door instead of the back.

“We will enter through the front even though the backdoor is open. We do not want to enter through the back… we want to enter from the front but they opened the backdoor for us,” he said during his speech.

Hadi further said the movement to establish a backdoor government with PAS has the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership worried.

“Some are afraid that there’ll be chaos when the backdoor is open.

“They are scared, and so there’s now confusion in PH,” he told some 600 PAS and Umno members during the ceramah.

The Islamist leader also said it is normal for political leaders to accept such offers, not for their own sake but for the country and the people.

“Us politicians will not let go of opportunities and that is normal. We are not greedy, we want to save the country instead,” Hadi said.

PH had claimed that former Umno vice-president and Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein is attempting to form government without DAP and Amanah.

The plot, allegedly involving senior PH leaders, has been denied by Umno and Hishammuddin.

Hishammuddin, who is former defence minister, also denied he is attempting to scuttle plans for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to succeed Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.

Talks of a backdoor government reached fever pitch when PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali met with 17 BN lawmakers last Monday.

Azmin, who is economic affairs minister, said the meeting was normal and does not involve plans to prevent Anwar from becoming prime minister.

The opposition MPs had also said the meeting was about economic matters and allocations for their constituencies. – November 24, 2019.
