CHINA is willing to help Malaysian authorities in their efforts to cripple transnational crime syndicates involving Chinese citizens, said Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Bai Tian.

He said this included the sharing of intelligence on the online investment scam in Cyberjaya busted by the Immigration Department recently.

“We are ready to offer our assistance in terms of identifying the 680 suspects of Chinese nationality and we are ready to cooperate with Malaysian law enforcement agencies in any cross border crime crackdowns, including in this case,” he said.

Bai was speaking after making a guest appearance on the “Bicara Duta” programme today at Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the suspects in the case should be punished by the law of this country if they were convicted.

“We fully support this operation because our policy is we oppose any Chinese citizen committing crimes abroad no matter where in the world. We think they should be punished by (Chinese) law,” he said.

Bai Tian said the embassy was prepared to assist the family members of the suspects but it has not received any appeals for help in the case.

Last Wednesday, the Immigration Department busted a China-based online investment syndicate when it arrested 680 Chinese nationals running the operations in Cyberjaya.

The suspects were arrested after Immigration officers raided the six-storey building, believed to be the call centre of the operations targeting victims in China.

All suspects including 77 women, entered this country via social visit passes and nearly all of them could not produce their passports and identification documents after being arrested.

They are currently in remand for 14 days from Thursday. – Bernama, November 23, 2019.

  • This is a very dangerous precedent. China is questioning the sovereignty of Malaysia. Hong Kong is seeing what happens when China insists on applying their law to citizens in other jurisdictions. The crime was committed in Malaysia and the trials need to be held there.
