ANWAR Ibrahim has rubbished rumours of a plot to pass a motion of no confidence in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“I would know if there was one. And I talk to Muhyiddin (Yassin), (Lim) Kit Siang and (Lim) Guan Eng almost every day,” said the PKR president, who is to succeed Dr Mahathir as prime minister, in Parliament today.
He said such a move was unlikely because Pakatan Harapan leaders shared a strong relationship.
The Port Dickson MP had earlier dismissed rumours that he had met the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, amid speculation of attempts to oust Dr Mahathir following the Tg Piai by-election on Saturday.
PH’s defeat by a 15,000-vote margin is viewed as Malaysians’ rejection of Dr Mahathir and PH after 18 months of government.
There is also talk of efforts to keep Dr Mahathir in office for a full term despite an agreement between all PH parties that he hand over the reins to Anwar before the end of the term in 2023.
On Monday night, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali hosted 22 Barisan Nasional MPs and several PKR MPs at his home, purportedly to discuss ways to make sure Dr Mahathir remained in office.
The economic affairs minister, however, said it was just an “ordinary meeting”.
Azmin, who has fallen out with Anwar over the past year, has openly declared his support for Dr Mahathir to remain in office until the end of his term. – November 20, 2019.
