When Malaysia’s aviation authority flies south

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia must take a hard look at itself if it wants to regain the coveted category 1 rating from the Federal Aviation Administration. – The Malaysian Insight pic by Nazir Sufari, November 15, 2019.

THE downgrading of Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia’s (CAAM) air safety rating by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States is a damning assessment of this country’s aviation industry, in particular and standards maintenance in government agencies generally.

This slide, from the coveted category 1 to category 2, suggests that the professionalism of the aviation personnel as a whole cannot stand up to international scrutiny, which is disturbing particularly where it concerns the safety and security of flying passengers.

  • Sorry to pour cold water on the writer's hope of reinstating out top tier safety rating but the reality is Rome was never built in a couple of years. Restructuring the remuneration system, ensuring that the quality of entrants into the aviation professions are adequate will take up to a decade to achieve what with the tattered state of our education system where priority is not given to STEM subjects in English and meritocracy is thrown out of the window in favour of khat and other subjects best taught outside the classroom. As to the hope that a recruitment drive for the best local entrants into the CAAM is almost like a pipe dream because Makaysians otherwise qualified to join have veed driven away by both racial discrimination and a civil service dominated by a non-technologically educated elite PSD. So dream on, the decline in standards have started long ago due to the Malay Agenda.

    • I don't see any problem here. CAAM is staffed by people with dignity. So what if we are not competitive. The world or at least Malaysia owes them free money and their dignity. When people are born stupid, they die stupid. There is no cure for stupidity.
