Search team finds last 2 men buried alive in Penang landslide

SEARCH and rescue workers today recovered the last two bodies buried in a landslide on Saturday, in Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

The search ends with the retrieval of the bodies of a Bangladeshi and a Malaysia, which brings the death toll up to 11.

Penang state secretary Farizan Darus said the Bangladeshi body was recovered first.

“This morning at 7.03am we found the 10th body and at 7.13am we found the 11th body, so all of them have been found,” he said.

The search team is still working to retrieve the body of Malaysian site supervisor, Yuan Kouk Wern, 27.

“The body is still flattened by a steel pillar.

“You have to give time, hopefully within an hour or so we will retrieve the body (of the Malaysian),” he told reporters on site.

The ninth victim found yesterday was Rahaman Abdur, from Bangladesh.

The landslide at a construction site in Lorong Permai 3 buried alive 14 people.

Meanwhile, northeast district police chief Anuar Omar said police had taken the statements of the three construction workers who escaped with minor injuries on Saturday.

“We took the statements of the thee victims who survived around 5pm yesterday here at the project site. All of them had proper documents,” he said.

The three survivors are a Bangladeshi, a Myanmar and an Indonesian.

“Their statements will assist us in the investigation,” said Annuar. – October 23, 2017.
