THE Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) founded by Dr Zakir Naik received millions of rupees in donations and used the money to propagate radical thought, Indian media report.
India’s Minister of State for Home Affairs G. Kishan Reddy said this today at the “No Money For Terror” conference in Melbourne.
Kishan said strict action has been taken against IRF.
“India’s experience testifies the fact that terror organisations in some countries are misusing NPOs to propagate fundamentalism, radicalisation and also to move funds to further the interests of terrorist organisations,” Reddy said.
“Some NPOs are being misused for fundraising at international level and moving the funds internationally, in the garb of donations and charities.”
Zakir has fled to Malaysia from India, where he is wanted on charges of promoting terrorism and money laundering.
A top official in India’s National Investigation Agency had said last month that Zakir was the common denominator among the majority of 127 terror suspects arrested across the Indian sub-continent.
The suspects who were linked to the Islamic State group had said they were inspired by Zakir’s speeches.
The preacher and his religious rhetoric came to the attention of Indian police after the suspects in a deadly Dhaka terror attack in 2016 cited Zakir as the inspiration for the massacre of 29 people.
The Mumbai-born Zakir is also the founder of Peace TV, an Islamic satellite television channel that has been banned in several countries, including Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The Malaysian government has stated that it would be officially informing India that it would not be deporting the preacher home as requested, and that it would also explain the reasons for its refusal. – November 8, 2019.
