Cabinet has final say on CPTPP ratification

THE cabinet will make the final decision on whether to ratify the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), said the Economic Action Council (EAC).

The matter was decided at the EAC meeting held in Putrajaya yesterday, said the council in a statement today.

It said the meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, discussed the results of the Economic Affairs Ministry’s impact study on CPTPP.

“Trade agreements such as CPTPP need to take into account the government’s commitment to implementing inclusive development policies, so that the benefits generated by CPTPP can be enjoyed in tandem with those of the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.”

The implications and potential impact of CPTPP were discussed in depth at yesterday’s meet, said the council.

In addition to Putrajaya’s efforts to create a more competitive, efficient and conducive domestic market environment, EAC said the results of a Malaysia Competition Commission review of the food sector under the Competition Act 2010 were also discussed.

The meeting deliberated on the prospect of restructuring the food supply chain with the help of digital economic platforms and private sector involvement, with the goal being to lower the price of essential goods. – Bernama, November 7, 2019.
