TANJUNG Piai Umno must accept MCA’s Wee Jeck Seng as the Barisan Nasional candidate for the November 16 by-election and work hard to ensure he wins, said Mohamad Hasan.

The Umno deputy president said he does not want a repeat of what happened in last year’s general election, which saw local Umno members working against Wee, resulting in him losing the seat he had held for two terms to Pakatan Harapan’s candidate.

Mohamad’s warning comes after Tg Piai Umno said it should contest the parliamentary seat as it stands a better chance of winning the Malay vote.

“In the last general election, we lost (Tg Piai) due to internal problems. We need to rectify that. We need to stay together and see the big picture,” he told a ceramah in Penerok last night.

“Wee is our candidate, representing our pact (BN). We are fighting against PH, although there are also other candidates. But don’t forget, the fight is between BN and PH.

“Don’t look at this as just a fight for Tg Piai. Look at the big picture. We want to take over Putrajaya.”

To unseat PH in the 15th general election, he said, Umno needs more than PAS, with which it has inked a unity charter.

“So, let’s not fight among ourselves (in BN)... not just for this by-election, but also for GE15.”

He reminded Tg Piai Umno that even though the people are getting increasingly disappointed with the ruling coalition, they still have not shown solid support for BN.

“So, don’t go about creating fiction. We have to show them that we are united.”

The Tg Piai by-election will see a six-cornered battle between Wee, Karmaine Sardini of PH, Wendy Subramaniam (Gerakan), Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz (Berjasa), and tuition centre founder Ang Chuan Lock and businesswoman Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar (independents).

Early voting will take place on November 12.

The seat was left vacant following the death of Dr Md Farid Md Rafik on September 21. – November 6, 2019.
