THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is aware of graft allegations surrounding the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), Latheefa Koya said today.

“Let me get into that. I have been referred that issue. Once we start investigating and we get any breakthrough, we will let you know,” the chief commissioner told reporters.

The Malaysian Halal Industry Development (HDC), which was established in 2006 to take over halal certification from Jakim and promote local halal products internationally has turned into a white elephant, reports Asia Sentinel recently.

Jakim officers routinely solicit bribes to certify establishments and foods as adhering to Islamic religious law in preparation, it quoted sources as saying.

Meanwhile, minister in charge of religious affairs Mujahid Yusof Rawa reportedly said this is likely to be a case of imposters or rogue agents and such parties will face harsh penalties if found guilty.

He also said the Hong Kong-based media did not provide evidence to support its claims, which tarnishes Jakim’s image. – November 5, 2019.
