Third pygmy elephant found dead in Sabah

THE carcass of yet another pygmy elephant was found floating in Sg Kinabatangan this morning.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Augustine Tuuga confirmed the discovery, and said an investigation is under way to determine the cause of death.

“A team from the state Wildlife Department has been deployed to retrieve the carcass, so that a post-mortem can be carried out.

“It is difficult to determine when and where the elephant died, as the carcass was found floating in the river.”

It is the third such discovery in as many months.

A pygmy elephant was found dead in Sg Dumpas in Kalabakan, Tawau, on September 25, and another on an oil palm plantation in Beluran on October 19. – Bernama, November 3, 2019.
