DESPITE his eye infection, former prime minister Najib Razak turned up in Tg Piai today to cheer on the Barisan Nasional machinery.

Najib, who was excused from court yesterday because of an eye infection, started his tour of Tg Piai by performing Friday prayers at Masjid As Syakirin in Kg Sg Kuali before having a closed-door meeting with Umno branch leaders in the constituency.

The Tg Piai by-election will begin tomorrow with nominations at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim in Pontian.

“Do you see my swollen eyes? I have been to the clinic,” the former Umno president turned adviser told reporters.

Najib was accompanied by Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan, Ketereh MP and Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa, Youth chief Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and several other Supreme Council members.

The former prime minister and Umno president is also scheduled to meet Kg Sg Boh voters later today.

Najib’s 1Malaysia Development Bhd trial was postponed yesterday after he was given medical leave by the International Specialist Eye Centre.

His lead counsel, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, had told the Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday that his client’s eye problem could be more serious than conjunctivitis.

“Both his eyes have gotten worse, and his doctor suspects that it is more than conjunctivitis,” Shafee had said.

He had said that Najib is also scheduled to undergo a blood test.

The 66-year-old Najib faces 25 charges in total – four for abuse of power that allegedly brought him financial benefit to the tune of RM2.3 billion and 21 for money laundering involving the same amount of money.

The Tg Piai by-election was necessitated by the death of Dr Md Farid Md Rafik of Pakatan Harapan-Bersatu on September 21 of heart complications. He was 42.

Dr Farid, who was a deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and an anaesthesiologist by profession, captured the seat in the 14th general election in May 2018.

He polled 21,255 votes to beat Wee Jeck Seng (BN-MCA) and Nordin Othman (PAS) by 524 votes. Wee had garnered 20,731 votes and Nordin, 2,962 votes. – November 1, 2019.

  • What we can all see is that Najib lied, like he lies about everything else, to the Judge hearing his case, about his eye infection.
    What a load of hogwash!

  • Najib's presence will prove to be poison to the BN candidate. He has no idea how much the southern Johor people dislike him. Mesti kalah!
