DAP’S Ronnie Liu has been served a show-cause letter by the party’s disciplinary committee over his remarks on Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Bersatu.
Chong Chieng Jen, the committee chairman, said Sungai Pelek assemblyman Liu will be given a reasonable time to reply, but did not state a deadline.
“There is a deadline but I don’t want to discuss that,” he told reporters in the parliament lobby today.
He said the committee will decide whether to call in Liu after getting a reply to the letter.
“That is the process. Only after he replies we will make a decision on whether to call him,” he said.
Liu created a stir with his recent opinion piece, in which he criticised Dr Mahathir and warned Bersatu against making decisions not aligned with PH values.
He said Bersatu, of which Dr Mahathir is chairman, stands to lose the most if the pact broke up over the prime minister’s actions.
The remarks angered Bersatu leaders, with Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik and Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman hitting out at the DAP man.
Maszlee said Liu’s remarks were disrespectful and uncalled for, while Syed Saddiq said the party youth wing that he leads will consider DAP a target for open criticism unless action was taken.
DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke said disciplinary action would be taken against Liu, adding that though it was a personal statement, the remarks were irresponsible and could destabilise PH.
Liu refused to back down, saying he is willing to face disciplinary action. – October 29, 2019.
