UMNO and its allies, including new friend PAS, can become the country’s third force, said its president and Bagan Datoh MP Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid has voiced doubt that the power transition between Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim will take place, giving Umno and its allies an opportunity to become the third force.
“Yes, someone is waiting for that seat. Someone else doesn’t want to give it up,” he said at an Umno event in Pahang today.
“However, we can become the ‘third force’. You can be sure of that.
“Forty Umno and Barisan Nasional MPs, as long as we are united. There are 18 from PAS. They are united. God willing, 19 more from Sarawak, nine from Sabah.
“People are coming to us, not the other way around. Let them come to us because we are strong.”
Zahid is referring to speculation that Umno’s Hishammuddin Hussein is attempting to engineer a new federal government without Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties DAP and Amanah.
On October 15, PH issued a joint-statement urging Hishammuddin and his allies to stop the campaign of forming a new government.
PH Secretarial Council said it holds firm to the “muafakat PH” that is collectively agreed to by PKR, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), Amanah and DAP to form the government.
The statement came after Anwar hinted in Parliament that there was a plot to execute a “backdoor government” by those who wanted to escape prosecution.
Hishammuddin had denied involvement in wanting to form a government without DAP and Amanah.
“PH has no other work? The economy is in decline, the people are suffering. Are you all so busy politicking that you have forgotten your responsibility?” he said in a Facebook post after the latest report linking him to the power play in Putrajaya.
However, Zahid, who is facing 87 charges of corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering, said Umno will not seek revenge when it returns to power.
“We are not seeking revenge when we return to power. God is testing us. God wants to see if we are able to withstand challenges.
“If we cannot withstand a little bit of pain, how can we be leaders? If you suffer an ear flick and your ear becomes red, how can you be a leader?”
Umno and PAS inked an agreement to cement its political cooperation after decades of being at odds.
The two parties agreed to work together after they lost in the May 2018 general election. – October 27, 2019.
