DR Mahathir Mohamad should be allowed to serve out his term as prime minister, said PKR deputy president and Economics Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali.
Azmin said those who accused him of working to form a new government are the masterminds who want to form an administration through the backdoor.
“Quarters that want to reshuffle the government earlier than that, be it two years or one, are those who want a back-door government,” he said without mentioning Pakatan Harapan designated prime minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Azmin’s position is opposed to Anwar’s position, who has publicly said he expects to succeed Dr Mahathir next year after Pakatan Harapan’s second anniversary in power.
“Dr Mahathir should be allowed to remain as prime minister until the end of the term as it is the people’s mandate,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby today.
Azmin is among those named as collaborating with Umno vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein to form a government that excludes Pakatan Harapan component parties DAP and Amanah.
Azmin said the Pakatan Harapan consensus is for Anwar to take over from Dr Mahathir but without a timeline.
“What is decided by Harapan is only in spirit and an understanding without any fixed timeframe.
“I challenge any individual to tell the public that the agreement sets for a near term (transition). There is none. Why is this matter being played up?”
He said unnecessary speculation on the transition plan should stop as it is not doing any good for the country’s economy. – October 22, 2019.
