ENGINEERING graduate Wong Kan Ye should be forgiven for his protest during a convocation ceremony if he is sincere about regretting his actions, said Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan.
Mohamad also said the issue should be handled delicately without everyone getting emotional.
He added that Wong was in the wrong for staging his one-man protest calling for the resignation of Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Abdul Rahim Hashim during his convocation ceremony on Monday.
“He did something that has not been done before. We can call him up (for discussion), and he has to genuinely regret his actions. The place of protest was inappropriate.
“Everyone makes mistakes. We can forgive him if he apologises to the vice-chancellor and to the university,” Mohamad said after attending the Selangor Umno convention in Shah Alam today.
On Monday, Wong had flashed a placard while on stage to receive his scroll demanding Rahim’s resignation due to the latter’s allegedly racist speech at the Malay Dignity Congress.
The university, one of the co-organisers of the controversial event, subsequently lodged a police report against Wong, accusing him of disrespecting protocol and disrupting proceedings.
Wong has denied the charges, saying he was making a stand against racism. He had also said that he would repeat his protest if given the chance.
At the Malay Dignity Congress, Rahim allegedly said in his speech that the change of government after the general election had destroyed Malay political dominance that Malay privileges were now being questioned by other communities.
He allegedly warned non-Malay communities not to challenge the social contract they had with the Malays. – October 19, 2019.
