A MALAY students group wants Education Minister Maszlee Malik to defend Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor Abdul Rahim Hashim from calls to step down over a purportedly racist speech the academic gave recently.
Federation of Malay Students Union (GPMS) president Mohd Alif Anas Md Noor said the office of the vice-chancellor was a prestigious that must be respected.
“We urge the Education Ministry and minister Maszlee to give us an assurance that the vice-chancellor and UM will be defended against these attacks,” said Alif.
Alif also said Rahim’s speech at the recent Malay Dignity Congress was in line with his role as an academic and a public university administrator.
“GPMS wishes to remind everyone that the role of a vice-chancellor is also as an academic, and comes with its own privileges and academic freedom.
“The vice chancellor is free to express his views as long as it is within the ambit of the law,” he said.
Alif said this at a gathering to support Rahim at the entrance of UM this afternoon.
On Monday, civil engineering graduate Wong Yan Ke, 23, flashed a placard demanding UM vice-chancellor Rahim’s resignation, while receiving his scroll at his convocation.
The university later lodged a police report against Wong, who said he was making a stand against racism.
UM accused Wong of not respecting the convocation and disrupting protocol, charges he has denied.
At the recent Malay Dignity Congress, Rahim had allegedly said the change in government after the 14th general election had eliminated Malay political dominance and asserted that Malay privileges were being questioned.
Rahim was also alleged to have warned others not to challenge the social contract.
The police took Wong’s statement earlier this week and are investigating him under Section 504 of the Penal Code for intentional insult to break the public peace.
GPMS also said people should respect academic freedom and not to be rude against Rahim.
Alif said Wong was influenced by DAP in carrying out his one-person protest.
“If we look at social media, Wong is always associated with DAP. The protest may have been planned to embarrass the vice chancellor.
“This is not our assumption. Wong’s demands are the same as put forward by Dapsy in wanting Rahim to step down,” he said. – October 18, 2019.
