Don’t get upset with Hisham, Umno and co

WHY get upset with Hishammuddin Hussein or any Umno politician trying to sink Pakatan Harapan by backroom dealings and slither back to power with some Umno MPs?

Desperate moves are what politicians the world over are famous for, especially those booted out of positions of power they believe are their birth right.

Being on the margins of Malaysian political life and starved of the gravy train has been tough for the Umno men. Sure, they believe that their pact with PAS will bring them back to power at the next general election.

But most of them cannot wait that long. Too many intangibles between now and then: political funding could be down to a trickle; foot soldiers on the ground need to be fed now and every passing day means tapping into personal reserves.

So, hardly surprising that Hishammuddin or other Umno politicians are trying to bring about the collapse of PH by pushing a home-based agenda.

According to senior officials of PKR, DAP, Bersatu and Amanah, the plan is for a new government comprising PKR, Bersatu and Umno chaps.

Surplus to requirements are Amanah and DAP.

We should not get upset with Hishammuddin and friends. This is what the opposition is meant to do – disrupt.

Instead, we should be livid with those within the PH government who are either encouraging the Umno overtures or at least giving the impression that it is all right to breathe the same air as Umno politicians.

For the secretaries-general of PH parties to issue a statement to bring attention to the nefarious scheme to return to power by the backdoor, it suggests some degree of concern on their part.

But why go public? Surely this matter could have been discussed at the PH council meeting and sorted out behind closed doors.

Unless, some of the PH leaders want to smoke out the collaborators within their ranks or kill the political project before it reaches the point of no return.

Yes, Malaysians should be livid with anyone in PH who is giving Umno members comfort in this dastardly plan to usurp the mandate given to DAP and Amanah.

These individuals have forgotten who put them in power. Here is a reminder.

At GE14, support for PH among Chinese voters was more than 93% and among Indian voters it was 83.5%. PH only managed to snare slightly more than 22% of the Malay vote.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the bulk of non-Malay voters supported PH because they were comfortable with the position of DAP, PKR and Amanah and because of the leaders associated with these parties.

Any move to alter the composition of the PH government will be a move to disrespect the mandate given at GE14. – October 17, 2019.

  • Regard Hisham move as a test for the integrity of PH and particularly of Tun. More such tests are welcomed.
