THE Home Ministry is reviewing the secondment of controversial preacher Zamihan Mat Zin to the Prisons Department following his remarks about a Muslim-only laundrette that were also critical of the Johor sultan, Deputy Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said.
There were many procedures to withdraw a government employee from secondment, Sinar Online quoted Nur Jazlan as saying.
“We are still deciding on his position because the process to stop the services of a government servant is not easy, there are many procedures,” he said.
Zamihan is a Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) officer who was seconded to the Home Ministry to work on rehabilitating radicalised inmates in Kajang Prison.
The preacher was remanded for two days and is being investigated under the Sedition Act over a lecture in which he criticised the Johor sultan’s decree against Muslim-only launderettes in the southern state.
His speech that went viral on the Internet, was made at a ceramah in a Selangor mosque, in which he said Muslims had to remain “pure” by not mixing their laundry with that of non-Muslims, whom he called “unhygienic”.
He also said it was not Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s right to ban Muslim-only laundrette in the state.
As his speech was made in a Selangor mosque, the state’s ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, ordered the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Mais) to withdraw Zamihan’s preaching credentials.
Yesterday, Zamihan who is also president of the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah (Aswaja), apologised to the Selangor ruler.
Johor had earlier taken action over Zamihan’s remarks, including severing ties with Jakim. – October 18, 2017.
