POLICE will not arrest Human Resources Minister M. Kula Segaran based on a picture, Bukit Aman’s counter-terrorism chief said.

The photo of the minister, posing with a supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) posted on social media yesterday, was not sufficient to warrant his arrest, said Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division (E8) principal assistant director Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said today.

“We cannot simply arrest Kula because of a picture,” he told a press conference in Bukit Aman.

Ayob Khan was asked about the photo of Kula Segaran posing with Seeman Senthamilan, chief coordinator of Naam Tamilar, a party based in south India that supports the LTTE.

Ayob Khan said police were monitoring Seeman, who has been visiting Malaysia since 2012. His visits are said to have included meetings with VIPs in the country sympathetic to the Tamil Eelam cause.

Ayob Khan said police were aware of Seeman’s visits to Malaysia and may consider banning him from entering the country.

Kula Segaran yesterday denied any involvement with terrorist organisations, calling the social media posting “lies and false news”.

“There are lies being perpetuated on social media that I have links with terrorist organisations. I categorically deny this allegation,” he said in a statement, urging police to investigate those spreading claims about him.

The DAP vice-chairman said he had also been assigned by the party to be the liaison between the families of two DAP assemblymen arrested in the police’s probe into the LTTE’s supposed revival.

The elected representatives are Gadek assemblyman G. Saminathan, who is also a Malacca exco, and Seremban Jaya assemblyman P. Gunasekaran.

Kula Segaran said he had visited both Saminathan’s and Gunasekaran’s families, and said they were in shock.

DAP has also assigned lawyers Ram Karpal Singh and RSN Rayer, who are also MPs, to provide legal representation to the assemblymen. – October 13, 2019.
