PUTRAJAYA will allocate funds for Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) only if MCA relinquishes its interests in the institution, said Lim Guan Eng.

The finance minister today said, just as the media should be free from any political agenda, education must also remain apolitical.

“I think (Prime Minister) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) made it very clear. There should be no control on any media, similar to education. If MCA is ready to let go of their political influence, we will restore the funding,” Lim told a post-Budget 2020 press conference at the Parliament building today.

The Bagan MP said the government was not stopping MCA from running the institution, only that the university college would no longer receive public funds should it remain in MCA’s hands.

“Why should we channel funds to a politically controlled institution? We will restore it if they relinquish control of TAR UC. Why is it too difficult for them to let go?” Lim added.

Yesterday, MCA president Wee Ka Siong expressed disappointed with the zero allocation from the government after the tabling of Budget 2020.

“There was no mention (of it) at all. Now, TAR UC is not even getting one sen, similar to what happened last year under Lim Guan Eng.

“This is the problem we face and I am saddened by it,” he had said.

The Ayer Hitam MP said that MCA had fought for some 50 years to secure matching grants for TAR UC, and that it had received an average of RM30 million to RM60 million annually under the previous government. – October 12, 2019.

  • It make good sense. MCA, do the right thing as you cannot expect funding when it is belonged to MCA, an opposition party.

  • MCA's Wee..now, no more easy money and TAR UC really needs to find ways to self sustain, time to ask the academicians to integrate into business world and cost-cutting for real.

  • No reason for the tax payers money to be channelled to a political link college. Moreover, the public had already donated hundreds of millions to build the college. No reason to keep funding it if it remains private. The college and the iener should find their own ways to source for funding like any other colleges.
The college has no reason to raise fees too as they do not have to recoup the investment like other privately owned colleges!

  • That was a mistake by BN to allocate funds for a politically run university. Universities must remain a political. On that note, the VC of Universiti Malaya should be relocated and given a desk job in the education department for making racial slurs during the recent Council gathering. A VC should behave professionally and must be apolitical because his or her role must be to enrich students, irrespective of race, colour and creed, with knowledge. VC Rashid must be removed.
On a similar note, MCA should relinquish its ownership and control over TAR University if they GENUINELY ARE SINCERE IN WANTING THE STUDENTS TO EXCEL!! Dr Wee should know better . If you interests lies in the well being of the students, you will relinquish your hold in the University. Dont expects and handouts! Remember the saying.... DONT BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU.. You talk so much against PH government, and yet you expect the government to help you?!
In fact, you are solely responsible for TAR not getting any funding under the 2020 Budget..
