MALAYSIA Airlines (MAS) appears to have been taken by surprise over news that its chief executive officer Peter Bellew will be leaving to rejoin Irish budget airlines RyanAir.

In a short statement this evening, MAS said it has noted “the unexpected announcement by RyanAir Holdings PLC to the London Stock Exchange regarding CEO Peter Bellew”.

The national carrier said Bellew had expressed his commitment to MAS on September 27, when asked whether he would rejoin RyanAir.

“He (Bellew) said that he was happy to be in Malaysia and that the turnaround of Malaysia Airlines would be the ‘greatest achievement of my life’.

“The Malaysia Airlines board of directors will meet and an announcement will be made in due course,” corporate communications manager Anis Dzun Nurin said.

MAS said operations and services would continue as usual and that the MAS Recovery Plan remained on track.

Earlier today, Ryanair announced that Bellew would be returning as chief operations officer.

In the Ryanair statement, Bellew said: “I am excited to return home to Ryanair and take up the challenge to grow the operation sustainably.  I look forward to working with all the team and all the crews I know so well to further develop our growth to 600 aircraft over the next six years.”

Bellew took over from outgoing CEO Christoph Mueller on July 1 last year after the latter quit MAS less than a year into his contract, citing personal reasons.

Bellew is the third MAS CEO in two years after Mueller and Ahmad Jauhari Yahya, who stepped down after the twin MAS tragedies of MH370 and MH17 in 2014. – October 17, 2017.

  • I think Peter Bellew knows that the faster he runs away the better it is . It is very difficult to run an organisation where rent seeking process and a mandatory "charity feeding" to the workforce is part of the recovery plan restructuring. When things goes well many parasites start creeping around to ready for the plunder. You can place a first class CEO to manage but when a third world mentality and corruption being rampant it is no success story.
