LIBERATION Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) should not be equated with the Palestinian and the Rohingya struggles, said the opposition bloc today.
“The Palestinians received Jewish settlers before their lands were taken by the Zionists,” said opposition leader Ismail Sabri Yaakob in Parliament lobby today.
“Therefore, don’t make the Palestinian issue as a basis for supporting a terrorist organisation like LTTE.
“As for the Rohingya, they are a people who are being victimised by their own government in Myanmar.”
The opposition bloc was responding to the arrest of two DAP politicians and five others over their alleged links to LTTE yesterday.
After the arrests, a number of DAP leaders played down the significance of LTTE and tried to equate support for LTTE to support for the Palestinian issue.
Ismail added they regretted Finance Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng’s statement that there will be no further arrests by the police.
“This represents political interference into police matters as it involves a minister trying to intervene. We hope the police are not intimidated by this and would continue with their investigations,” said Ismail.
Ismail said the opposition hopes that the Attorney-General’s Chambers will be fair once the investigation is completed and act based on evidence.
Today’s press conference was also attended by MPs from Gabungan Parti Sarawak and PAS.
LTTE was officially defeated on May 17, 2009, while its leader V. Prabakharan was killed by Sri Lankan government forces two days later. – October 11, 2019.
