LEADERS from Umno and PAS must be ready to enter temples and other places of worship if both parties want non-Muslims to understand the Muafakat Nasional charter and draw their support, a forum was told by PAS veteran Subky Latif.
The former journalist and party information chief informed the audience at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) that such a move is needed to draw non-Muslims in its quest to take over Putrajaya.
Umno and PAS inked the charter last month at PWTC after months of discussion.
The charter was signed following the Cameron Highlands parliamentary by-election win and victories in the Semenyih and Rantau state by-elections in Selangor and Negri Sembilan, respectively, where both parties cooperated.
The charter, called Muafakat Nasional (national accord), is driven by six thrusts and is aimed at promoting a new narrative driven by Umno and PAS that is supposed to rival PH’s “Malaysia Baru”.
Malay-Muslim leadership is the central pillar of the new accord with a promise to protect the rights of other ethnic and religious communities.
Subky said capturing Putrajaya without non-Muslim support would not be good for the country.
“If we win without the support from the Chinese and Indians, I would not be happy. That would be a disaster for Malaysia. Pre-Merdeka and post-Merdeka, the Chinese and the Indians are already here and we need to ensure that their rights will be protected,” said the veteran PAS leader.

On the new working arrangement with its long-time nemesis Umno, Subky said the former ruling party cannot win Putrajaya without PAS and PAS would never reach Putrajaya if it ditched Umno.
Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin, who was a panelist, said that the charter is the right platform to put Malay leaders on.
He added that the charter will ensure a Malay-led government that is responsible and competent.
“When we signed the charter, we realised that Malaysia is a multi-ethnic society. We wanted the charter to be tolerant and modest. However, we want Malay leaders to be where they are supposed to be. We will ensure that the Malay-led government is responsible and competent,” said the former Johor Menteri Besar.
PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad assured that non-Malays will not face discrimination when Umno and PAS take over Putrajaya from Pakatan Harapan.
He said PAS was able to govern Kelantan for 29 years without any complaints from the non-Muslim communities.
“When we signed, many made nasty remarks saying we are racist and we will neglect the non-Muslims. For 29 years, have we heard the Chinese in Kelantan were discriminated against? Have we heard BN neglect the Indians and other ethnic groups in the state?
“When Islam leads, everyone will be given fair treatment, the nation will prosper under Islam,” he said. – October 10, 2019.
