ANWAR Ibrahim today dismissed a demand made at yesterday’s Malay Dignity Congress that the finance minister must be Muslim.
The PKR president, who has himself held the finance portfolio, said all that was required for the job was that the candidate be qualified and competent.
“The finance minister must be a person who is a qualified, competent professional who cares for the Malays, Bumiputeras and cares for all Malaysians,” he told reporters in Parliament.
At the congress yesterday, PAS MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari submitted a resolution calling for the posts of the prime minister, deputy prime minister, menteri besar and ministers be reserved for Muslims.
He also wanted Muslims to fill the offices of the chief justice, attorney-general and chief secretary to the government, and to helm the police and armed forces.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng is the finance minister appointed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad after the general election last year. – October 7, 2019.
