PKR’s politics match mine, says Umno old boy Salleh

PKR’S multicultural nature and what it stands for are among the reasons for former Sabah Umno leader Salleh Said Keruak joining the party.

The former Sabah chief minister said on his blog today that his aim was to assist PKR in bringing about progressive, multi-racial progressive politics that prioritise stability and simplicity, especially in Sabah.

“In the context of racial-based politics and extremists that can threaten the country’s unity and stability today, I believe PKR is on the right track to save the country from the catastrophe of extremism,” he said.

It is believed that Salleh has joined the party without the knowledge and consent of the Sabah PKR leadership, state party officials said.

Once a loyalist of former prime minister Najib Razak, Salleh’s PKR membership application is marked  “approved” on the party website and sighted by The Malaysian Insight. It is indicated that he applied to join PKR on August 25.

Sabah PKR leaders are said to have found out about his membership in a similar manner.

Salleh and former Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia were among the five MPs, nine assemblymen and 21 division heads from Sabah Umno who abandoned the Barisan Nasional party late last year.

He said they left because they wished to focus on the future of Sabah.

“From the day I joined politics until now, I have remained moderate, progressive and a supporter of stability.

“I believe that this is the right step for me, and I believe I can contribute towards Sabah’s stability and prosperity in particular, and Malaysia in general, through my involvement in PKR.”

Salleh was briefly the Sabah chief minister in the 1990s. In the 14th general election last year, he contested the Kota Belud parliamentary seat for BN but lost to his cousin, Parti Warisan Sabah’s Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, who is now deputy energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister.

Last month, Salleh said he backed PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to become the next prime minister. – October 6, 2019.

  • Your greatest strength is in astoundingly defending your boss. Perhaps that's what PKR find you useful.
