THE Malay Dignity Congress (MDC) on Sunday has a political agenda of bringing together Dr Mahathir Mohamad and PAS, said Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy.
The DAP leader said this was more apparent when PKR president Anwar Ibrahim was not invited for the congress.
“I think the organisers are playing politics in having this MDC.
“Whether Dr Mahathir is aware of this or not is unclear, but there is a grand motive behind this MDC.
“It is not that Malays are being oppressed and exploited in the country to the extent you need a MDC,” he said in a statement today.
The event is organised by Universiti Malaya’s Malay Excellence Studies Centre in collaboration with UiTM, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Sultan Idris Education University.
The organisers said Dr Mahathir was invited as a leader of a Malay party.
Critics have slammed this, saying that Dr Mahathir should be representing all Malaysians as the prime minister.
Anwar, meanwhile, said yesterday that he hopes Dr Mahathir will have a message for all Malaysians in his speech at the congress.
He also revealed that he was not invited to the congress.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has said he will be attending the congress while Umno will be represented by its secretary-general Annuar Musa.
The congress comes right after Umno and PAS established a unity charter with the intention of uniting the Malays to support them in the next general election.
However, several quarters have said the MDC is being organised to counter the Umno-PAS pact and is aimed at sending a message to the Malays that Pakatan Harapan and its Malay parties will protect Malay interests.
Ramasamy also questioned the role of the four public universities in organising the event.
“Can public universities funded by taxpayers money organise a conference like this with no bearing on academic excellence?
“While universities have a certain degree of freedom, but it does not allow them to indulge in activities within the campus or outside for the pursuit of political objectives, particularly in promoting a racial agenda,” he said.
He also asked if Education Minister Maszlee Malik or the cabinet have approved the event being organised by the public universities.
Meanwhile, DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang also asked if the four universities would organise dignity congresses for other races.
“Would these four public universities be organising a Chinese Malaysian Dignity Congress, Indian Malaysian Dignity Congress, Kadazan Dignity Congress, Dayak Dignity Congress, Orang Asli Dignity Congress and most important of all, a Malaysian Dignity Congress?
“There can only be dignity for Malaysia if every ethnic and religious group in Malaysia enjoys dignity – which will be in keeping with the fundamental principles in the Malaysian constitution and the Rukunegara,” Lim said in a statement today.
Previously, Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin alleged that Dr Mahathir’s Bersatu used the public universities as a tool to organise the congress. – October 4, 2019.

Very soon, MCA will very likely trounce Bersatu at Tanjung Piai, and if Mahathir has any dignity (learn some from the conference perhaps), he should step down and handover the reins to someone who has the interests of all Malaysians at heart.
