THIS morning I was having breakfast with my colleague Nizam. We ordered nasi lemak and teh tarik at level 41 of KLCC Tower 2.

While sipping our teh tarik, he suddenly pointed out the Kg Baru vicinity from the place we were eating at level 42.
He highlighted to me how in future we will see modern development in Kg Baru. The development of Kg Baru was mooted by the previous Federal Territories minister but up till now, it is to no avail.
It may be due to negotiation between landowners and the government on the price for the land transfer or acquisition. Furthermore, this issue is sensitive as it touches upon the Malays’ wellbeing and interests.
Recently, Khalid Samad, the current minister, again proposed to develop Kg Baru. He offered RM850 per square foot to Kg Baru landowners. To date, based on news report, 85% of Kg Baru’s landowners are receptive to the idea and price.
I am not against any development of Kg Baru. It is timely. As we can see a lot of dilapidated houses and badly maintained buildings are an eyesore. The issue is – what kind of development? To me, the development should not be controversial and must benefit the public at large. The proposed development must be in line with our aspiration as modern developed country.
I propose that the government consider turning Kg Baru as a central park full of greens, trees, river streams and even man-made lake such as Central Park in Manhattan and Hyde Park in London.
To become a developed country, our focus of development should be sustainable, increasing the happiness index and people-centric.
Boasting a central park in Kuala Lumpur will boost up its image as green city. People who work around the area, especially in the Golden Triangle, will see the central park of Kg Baru as a new attraction for them to exercise and stroll around with their families.
To have Kg Baru central park will meet these objectives:
- Sustainable development
- People-centric development
- Promotion of healthy wellbeing
- Increase the happiness index
- Reduce depression and anxiety among the rat-race denizens.
Last but not least, Pakatan Harapan could boost its image provided it really comes up with a development that are people-centric and sustainable in line with its manifesto.
I am confident if this materialises, the park will be a landmark and success of the PH government. Let’s act and just do it. – October 1, 2019.
