MALAY interest groups will gather this morning in Shah Alam for the verdict on the inquest into the death of fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim to ensure the protection of Malay rights.
Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) president Azwanddin Hamzah told The Malaysian Insight that they wished to send a message to the government not to abuse the law for the benefit of certain parties.
He said the presence of Malays at the coroner’s court in Shah Alam today was important because of alleged attempts to pervert the course of justice in the case of Adib’s death.
“We urge people to come and show support so that Adib’s family gets justice.
“We do not want the rule of law to be abused and used by certain parties. This is the message we want to send to the government,” Azwanddin said.
Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Geras) chairman Abu Bakar Mohamed said the Malay gathering was held for three reasons.
“We gather to seek justice for Adib. Secondly, we want Attorney-General Tommy Thomas to resign for trying to influence the outcome of the inquest.
“And thirdly, we urge politicians not to play up racial and religious sentiments. That is very dangerous to the nation,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Adib’s family has filed for committal proceedings against the attorney-general for alleged contempt over his May media statement on the withdrawal of the lawyer representing the government agencies in the inquest.
his media statement and an affidavit filed by former conducting officer Hamdan Hamzah in April.
Syazlin Mansor was representing the Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the family of the deceased fireman in the inquest.
Thomas had also filed an affidavit denying that he ordered the conducting officer Hamdan Hamzah to file a sworn statement in Paril declaring that Adib’s injuries were not inflicted by rioters in front of Sri Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya on November 27.
Thomas in his July 27 affidavit said he did not meet Hamdan and had nothing to do with the latter’s statements on the inquest.
The gathering today is organised by Gerakan Pembela Ummah (Ummah) in solidarity with Adib’s family.
Ummah chairman Aminuddin Yahaya hoped the deceased and his family will finally receive justice today.
He also urged those attending the rally not to resort to violence and provocation.
A group from PAS is also expected at the inquest this morning, headed by deputy Youth chief Fadhli Shaari, who is the Pasir Mas MP.
Last night Ummah organised a session of prayers at the Wilayah Persekutuan mosque for a good outcome today.
Adib, 24, died on December 17 in the National Heart Institute. He had died despite initially showing signs of recovery from what appeared to have been a beating. – September 27, 2019.
