THE Umno pact with PAS will have little impact on the party’s Sabah chapter, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

The Umno president said he would not allow the alliance to negatively affect Sabah Umno, which would soon have autonomy to form a pact of its own with the party of its choice.

He said earlier today that the party would make Sabah Umno’s autonomous status official at the party’s general assembly in November.

Zahid conceded that Islamist PAS was unpopular in Sabah which eschewed politics based on religion.

“I see the national pact with PAS will slightly affect the party in Sabah. But we will not allow this to trouble the state.

“At present, we are not certain with which party Sabah Umno will form an alliance with, but we will announce it when the time comes,” he said, after launching the Sabah Umno convention at
the state party headquarters in Kota Kinabalu, today.

On September 14, rivals of 40 years, Umno and PAS signed a charter for cooperation in conjunction with the two-day gathering for “Ummah Unity” at the Putra World Trade Centre. – September 21, 2019.
