JOHOR’S Department of Environment (DOE) and Fisheries Department have been directed to investigate the cause of fish dying in Pantai Lido and drains near the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), near Johor Baru recently.
Johor Menteri Besar Sahruddin Jamal said both departments should be pro-active and provide the state government with information on the discovery of the dead fish.
He said this was the second time dead fish have been found in the area, after the first on August 28 at Pantai Lido.
“I have directed the DOE and Fisheries Department to investigate the real cause leading to the death of the fish.
“This is the second incident – by right they should be pro-active in giving feedback to the state government about the actual cause. I am waiting for a report from them,” he told reporters at the Kundang Ulu Multipurpose Hall near in Tangkak today.
Earlier, Sahruddin attended the Jalinan Ukhuwah Johor Corporation (JCorp) programme in Tangkak today where 3,000 academic books were given out to 100 schools in Johor under the Books for Asia programme.
Also present was JCorp president and CEO Kamaruzzaman Abu Kassim.
Yesterday, a video went viral on Facebook about the discovery of dead fish in the drains around HSA.
According to the state Local Government, Urban Well-being and Environment Committee chairman Tan Chen Choon, the fish probably died due to the weather and a disruption to the drainage system caused by land-reclamation activities in the Pantai Lido area.
He said early findings of the in-situ reading of the water in the location showed the level of dissolved oxygen to be very low, at about 1.2 parts per million.
The findings also showed there were no industrial sources in the area that could be the cause of the incident. – Bernama, September 7, 2019.
