ONE of the workers severely injured by a World War II bomb at the Bandar Malaysia MRT site yesterday has died from his injuries, with two others remaining in critical condition, the MRT’s main contractor MMC-Gamuda said in a statement today.

“We regret to inform that of the three injured, one succumbed to the injuries and passed away last night. Two others are critical,” the company said.

The statement said the three general workers were immediately sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for treatment yesterday, and were initially reported to be in stable condition at the point of admission before their condition worsened later into the night.

Three Bangladeshi workers were severely injured in the blast, which occurred at 5pm yesterday.

Reports said two of the victims had their legs severed, while a third sustained injuries to his arms and legs.

Kuala Lumpur Police chief Amar Singh, who had confirmed that the explosion occurred during construction work, said investigations into the incident are ongoing.

“We are still investigating, we only know that it was a WWII bomb that exploded. Please let the investigations complete first,” he told The Malaysian Insight today by phone.

A spokesperson from HKL said two of the three victims of the blast were in their 30s.

“The one who died was at the age of 25, the other two is 34 years old.

“The two injured are currently in the general Intensive Care Unit (ICU) here at HKL and treated for industrial injury.

“The one who passed away will be brought to the forensic department in HKL for post mortem, as for the classification of the case you will have to refer to the police, as it is a police case,” she said.

In July, it was reported that a 227kg World War II bomb was discovered at a construction site at Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan. The bomb is believed to have been air-dropped.
