THE Housing and Local Government Ministry hopes that the acquisition of the Highland Towers condominium land, which has been neglected for almost 26 years, can be speeded up for redevelopment.
Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said engagement with interested parties had been concluded, but some residents did not have the time to state their agreement officially.
She hoped the Selangor government, via the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, could complete the land acquisition this month.
“Previously, the majority of the residents had agreed but I wanted to follow the correct procedure (in obtaining the agreement) and that no resident is left out,” she said after attending a programme at the Kampung Baru Salak Selatan in Kuala Lumpur today.
Zuraida had said the Highland Towers would be demolished by June this year.
There was a suggestion to redevelop the location as a recreation park, and building 50 bungalows.
On December 11, 1993, one of the three towers of the condominium in Hulu Kelang collapsed, resulting in 48 deaths. – Bernama, September 2, 2019.
