BOYCOTTING non-Bumiputera products will not benefit anyone or solve anything, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said such a boycott would only result in people not being able to buy products and services they need.

He added that it would also be counterproductive and jeopardise national unity.

“If one party is allowed to boycott something now, then others will make similar calls. This will just continue and who will buy anything?

“We are dependent on each other and we have to find other ways to sort out each other’s problems,” he said after an event in Kuala Lumpur today.

Several Facebook pages supporting Bumiputera-made products have sprung up recently, as well as calls to only buy such products.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng yesterday said a boycott of non-Bumi goods was counterproductive and unhealthy for national unity.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had on Friday also said any boycott would be counterproductive and would only serve to incite anger.

As for complaints, Saifuddin said his ministry had not received any from non-Bumi traders. – September 2, 2019.
