FINANCE Minister Lim Guan Eng should see the benefit of the campaign to buy Muslim products, PAS said today.
The Islamic party’s secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said Lim misunderstood the campaign’s intention when he urged opposition parties PAS and Umno to condemn a boycott of products by non-Bumiputeras.
“The campaign to buy Muslim-made products is an inclusive and competitive move in business and should be seen in a positive light,” Takiyuddin said in a statement today posted on social media.
“Studies show that the campaign in support of Muslim products has a positive effect resulting in a wider economic spillover,” he said, without citing the source of any study.
“It is certain to help SME entrepreneurs and enable those from rural areas to compete. It also provides jobs to unemployed youth.”
Takiyuddin said the government should help make the campaign a success.
Several Facebook pages supporting Muslim-made product have sprung up recently, as well as calls only to buy Bumiputera-only products.
Lim said a boycott of non-Malay goods was counterproductive and unhealthy for national unity.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Friday also said any boycott was counterproductive as it only served to cause anger. – September 2, 2019.
